Mountrail: privacy and support
Topo maps, GPX and elevation gain to run, hike, ride and ski in the mountains, on iPhone and Apple Watch.
Language: Français · Deutsch · English · Italiano
Privacy
Mountrail collects no data. No account, no app server, no analytics, no third-party crash tool, no ads, no tracking.
What stays on your iPhone
- Your GPX tracks, aid stations, categories, goals and gear.
- Your outings: they are saved to Apple Health (workout and route) and summarised in the app. Apple Health handles its own iCloud sync.
- Workouts from other apps read in Apple Health, to show them in Activities.
- The photos you add to a track: reduced copies, in the app's folder. Mountrail uses Apple's photo picker and has no access to your library.
- Your position: it is used for the map, the outing and "Around me". It is neither stored off the device nor sent, unless you tap "Send my position" on the emergency card.
What is sent, and to whom
- Map tiles: requested from swisstopo (Switzerland), IGN (France), basemap.at (Austria), IGN España, BKG (Germany) and Apple Maps elsewhere. A tile request contains neither your exact position nor an identifier.
- Elevation correction: the points of an imported track are sent once to the swisstopo or IGN elevation service, without an identifier.
- Route weather: the start, aid stations and high point of a track, with the planned passing time, are sent to Apple WeatherKit. Never your position.
- Purchases: handled by Apple (App Store). Mountrail sees no payment data.
Permissions
Location (in the background only during an outing you started), Apple Health (reading and writing workouts), motion (barometer for altitude). You can revoke them at any time in the iPhone Settings.
Deleting your data
Delete a track or an outing in the app, or delete the app to erase everything. Workouts saved in Apple Health are managed in the Health app.
Support
A question, a bug, an idea? Write to support@dawnlab.ch with your iPhone or Apple Watch model and the app version (Mountrail Settings, at the bottom).
How do I import a track?
Tap "Import" in Tracks, or share a GPX file to Mountrail from Files, Mail or a website. You can also add a route from "Explore".
How do I run with Apple Watch?
On the track page, tap the watch button to copy it, then start the outing on the watch. The iPhone follows the outing live.
Does the off-track alert work offline?
Yes. The off-track alert, your position and the emergency card work offline and without a subscription.
How do I restore my subscription?
Mountrail Settings → Mountrail Pro → "Restore purchases". To cancel: iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
Mountrail is a navigation aid, not a safety device. In the mountains, carry a map, enough battery and your own judgement. Water points are not guaranteed.
